I recently burned a new disc for me to listen to on my way to and from work. (I'd been getting slightly sick of the old one, though it was a very good mix of albums, as it turned out.) Anyway, one of the albums burned-and-shuffled on the mp3 disc is Andy Prieboy's Sins Of Our Fathers. I actually haven't heard this album before, I'd ripped it when Aila wanted to play a cut from it on the radio show I used to do for Steve.Fm, 50 Skidillion Watts Of Good Will. I really dug the track she chose ("Who Do You Think We're Coming For"), and I have been digging his work with Wall Of Voodoo lately, so I figured it'd be a safe bet that I would dig the album, AND it'd give me an excuse to finally listen to the damn thing.
SO, ANYWAY -- I was on my way to work, and this song came on, and I
couldn't figure out who it was -- it almost had a Scissor Sisters vibe
(for a minute I wondered if I'd put Ta-Dah on and forgot -- by the way,
I've finally come around on them, sorry I was late to that party), but
I couldn't place it. I liked the really strange disco-ish feel to
it, and the lyrics. I did a google search for the lyrics as soon
as I arrived at work, but no dice. I'd actually _forgotten_ I'd
put the Andy Prieboy album on the disc and was trying to figure it out
-- none of the other acts (Chumbawamba, Sufjan Stevens, Rilo Kiley, the
Minus 5, Cracker) I knew I'd put on fit at all -- about the closest was
maaaaybe Republica, like, perhaps that one cut from the other album
that I had downloaded but listened to only once or so. (Speaking
of Republica, anyone catch the mention of them on this week's Venture
Brothers? The Monarch claimed that when they first met, Dr.
Girlfriend looked like Saffron from Republica.) But anyway, so
about halfway through my busride home, another Andy Prieboy cut came
on, and I realized it pretty much had to be him, but I still wanted to
know what the cut WAS -- and after all, if it was indeed him; the
vocals didn't have his usual almost-kinda-Stan-Ridgway-kind-of-sound...
I suppose I could have dropped in another song by accident or
somethin'. So, I got home, ran up to look, and it's this
one. So, here. Enjoy this song, because I did.
Another request! Actually the only one of
Jellynail's requests he's recently made that I actually have! So
there you go! It's from the self-titled King Missile album, and
it's pretty cool! I am tired again, though this time I didn't
work late. I just didn't sleep great last night! But
tomorrow is the Jandek show, so I'll probably post the mp3 earlier
tomorrow, which is good. Particularly since if you've been here
for a while, you know I used to post them shortly after I got up in the
morning, and now it's basically whenabouts I go to bed. So
there. Anyway, though, hooray! King Missile!
I gots to go to a dub club meeting wit' a
quickness, so I shall make this brief! Even though I'm not a big
fan of Pork Soda, it's got its moments, one of which is this song,
which I've always liked because of the "Forgive Me If I Hesitate" part
and the shout out to the Residents. (Yeah, who would have guessed
that Les Claypool's a Residents fan.) So, anyway, here it
is! I used to play it to death on my college radio show.
Now I will post it here! Also, I haven't actually heard it in a
few years. So hooray!
Nash The Slash is another anonymous musician,
only instead of being from the US like the Residents, he's from
Canada. This is a cool sounding song, and it's pretty rad. I
enjoy it! It's from his album Thrash. Um, I got distracted
again and am posting this at the last minute. Bloo had a $15
bill. Amazon doesn't have this album, so you can get it from his site.
This is a really cool, dark track from Kirsty
MacColl's pentultimate album Titanic Days. I believe this one was
one of the ones she wrote with Johnny Marr from the Smiths, and it's
pretty rad. Titanic Days was a bit of a darker album for her --
this song and "Bad" particularly, but a lot of the record's got a
sadder theme to it in general, as it was after her marriage to Steve
Lilywhite fell apart. This song is just a character sketch,
though, and as far as I know, not actually based on anything in
particular. But it's still one of my favorites from this
brilliant album. This is one of those albums that I cannot
recommend highly enough. If you like Kirsty MacColl, or just
exquisite, highly literate pop music, you really NEED this album.
I'm kinda not in the mood to do this right now,
but I'm gonna be at the Ladytron show tonight, so I know I won't have
time later, so here it goes! This is from the Otis Ball & The
Chains album "I'm Gonna Love You Till I Don't", which is a great record
title. The band was discovered by They Might Be Giants, who were
instrumental in getting them signed to Bar/None -- and they also sing
backup on this cut, if you couldn't already tell. It's actually a
pretty good pop song with amusing lyrics. I don't think Otis Ball
ever released anything else aside from this record, and I should
actually pick up the full thing at some point, but hey. Here is
the cut with TMBG on it.
I'm real tired right now, and I haven't posted an mp3 for the day, so here we go! I've always dug this track (it's not really a song in the straight definition of the word, but if that matters to you, you suck) -- it's just so goofy and quotable. Granted, the bulk of the lyrics are variations on "HEY FAT BOY! ASSHOLE! C'MERE! YOU KILLED MY MOTHER! I KILL YOU!!", but when do those words NOT come in handy, huh? It's from the album Pure Guava, which is a pretty good one, though it took me a bit of warming up to, due to the sound-quality not being the best. But it's still pretty rad, and, hey, it's got a fat boy and threats of murder! What more can you ask for?
ALSO -- I'm not gonig to do it now, because I'm tired, but probably tomorrow, I'm going to go through here and provide Amazon Links to the albums from which you can buy all the tracks. At least the ones that aren't real rare or anything. They'll probably be affiliated up, so either a) You can buy them and I'll get a kickback or b) You can follow the link, add it to your wishlist, then log out and restart your browser or some such and buy the record without giving me a kickback. That's fine too. I do not expect/request/etc. the Amazonian Kickbacks, I just wanna make it so y'all can maybe actually BUY these records which I'm plugging. Because, seriously, they're all pretty damn rad albums and worth the purchase. And, hey, supporting artists is a good thing, because it lets them make more art and not wind up workin' in a gas station.
So, hooray for that!
This is just an outstanding song about bubblegum pop by Redd
Kross. It's a bit different than a lot of Redd Kross' stuff, but
that's OK. It's just a really bouncy, happy song, and I really,
really dig it. It's just incredibly catchy and... well, it just
puts you in a good mood. I don't really have a whole lot more to
add. I bet a kitten would like this song. The kitten would
probably bat a ball of yarn around in time to the song, while a cow
bounces up and down on her hind legs.
This here's going to be a two-fer by request! Two covers, two
songs that are wicked awesome. Two kitties. (No kitties
involved.) This first one is by Petty Booka, a Japanese group
that does alternately country-flavored and hawaiian-flavored covers of
songs. This one is in the Country bin, and it's AMAZING.
It's one of those that when I play it for them, they pretty much do the
whole jaw-droppin' thing, because not only is it an amusing arrangement
of this song, and completely different than what you'd expect from
Madonna, but it's also an IRON-SOLID arrangement, too. Just
really amazing banjo work and everything. I love this one.
