This is one of my favorite Elvis Costello songs,
and I figured I may as well share it for everyone. It's from the
second album, and the first with the Attractions, This Year's Model,
which may also be my favorite Elvis record. Either that or
Imperial Bedroom, probably. Both of those are outstanding.
This has a lot more edges to it, though, and a really great drum
part. Some of it reminds me a bit of Drums & Wires-era XTC,
though it adds the one thing that that era XTC lacked -- really awesome
organ, played here by Steve Nieve. Such a great song,
really.
The B-52s are pretty grand, and I've always dug this song. The video is one of my favorite B-52s videos as well, if anything, for the shot in the bridge-y bit of the song with them all cradling synthesizers as if they were babes in swaddling clothes. It's one of the most DEVO images DEVO never actually did. When I first saw that, I tried to find a screencap for my desktop wallpaper. I couldn't find it, which is odd, since it's a particularly striking image. I haven't yet searched again, though, and I think, if anything, it was a passing fancy. But this video is just so good, and it's such a lovely, good-natured song. Hooray!
This is from the last Barcelona album, Transhuman Revolution, and it's
the first song on there, and it's a pretty great one. This is my
favorite Barcelona album, and a pity they broke up after this.
Some really great lines in here, like "What can I do/I'm a shy boy and
raised Catholic", to explain the titular problem. One of the
Barcelona guys has formed a new band, Sprites, who are pretty
Barcelona-y. Which is good, because they need to continue to
exist. There is apparently another band called Barcelona who has
played at least a couple shows in Seattle. Boo to them for
stealing their name!
Also -- heads up, or, rather two!
First: I have uploaded my most recent Dub Club Mix for download here, so you can grab it if you are so inclined. The file will go away on the 19th or thereabouts as that's when my hosting expires, heh. Mwomp mwomp!
Secondly: I am about to upload the First Episode of the Untitled TODCRA Productions Project over at TODCRA.vox.com, so feel free to check that out! I'll be posting them every Sunday for about 15 weeks. Cause that's how many episodes there are. So feel free to put that in your iTunes RSS Podcast Downloader Thing since those actually ARE podcasts. (Kinda, they were actually broadcast on real radio first.) I'll be doing notes about them, too with each post. So go check that out. I'm really proud of the way those turned out. So, hooray!
Everyone knows Trio for "Da Da Da I Don't Love
You You Don't Love Me Aha Aha Aha", which is a pretty keen song
(Elastica's cover of it is pretty grand, too, actually). I wish I
could say that the rest of Trio's output was drastically different,
but, well, let's take a look at some of the other song titles: "Anna -
Letmeinletmeout", "Sunday You Need Love Monday Be Alone" and my
personal favorite, "Tooralooralooraloo - Is It Old & Is It
New". I guess once you get a theme, you stick with it.
Anyway, this is probably as different as Trio got, and like "Da Da Da",
it's a pretty cool 1980s synthpop tune. It's not the best song in
the world, but it's fun enough. Trio could have used a bit
more... difference in their sound (the album is cool but kind of
monotonous), but, well, it seemed to have worked for them, right?
