As for the Knife, I don't know a whole lot about them. My friend Lindsey gave me a burn of Deep Cuts a little while ago, mentioning the Ween-sound, and also that they're apparently a brother/sister combo from Sweden who go around in various masks. I'm not sure if they're anonymous or just the Daft Punk type of anonymous where everyone knows their names but you never see their faces. I thought originally that they only wore Luchadore masks, but I saw another picture where they were wearing cool bird mask things. So, I guess they're open. I should really get around to picking up one of their records for real. Like maybe this one, Silent Shout!
By the way, I'm thinking the Hiatus will be ending pretty soon. Part of it was that I've been busy updating my iTunes with Album Artwork because I am just that lame, but also that work has had me kinda slammed lately. But I'm thinking it'll be OK again soon!
So, in case you were wondering, Ladytron put on one damn hell ass king of a show. For reals. My god it was OUTSTANDING. So, here's another cut from them! The openers were CSS, from Brazil, who were amusing and a pretty good opening band, but I wouldn't buy the record at all. Their stage presence was sort of a combination of Too Much Joy, dance-punk and the film Palindromes. I liked Ben's idea of the band's genesis -- the lead singer's parents are loaded and bought her and her pedophile boyfriend a band. They were a great trainwreck to watch, so, hey.
Ladytron, however, were ASTOUNDING. They had a backdrop behind
them with a lot of high-powered strobes in front of that. The
backdrop would show low-rez images of highways and cityscapes, and
occasionally would go to a low-rez camera trained on the stage. The
cool thing about it was the way that it took a little while to figure
out it was a live camera. Particularly when it was overlaid with
other footage. Great visuals. The band (expanded by two members
for the live show) seemed to be enjoying themselves as well, and at
least half the songs were extended with really great outros and
whatnot, and the vocals were a lot more.. passionate than on record,
which is kind of odd to hear with such a deadpan band like Ladytron,
but also really cool. Lots of stuff from the new record, which is
great, since it's one of the best records of last year, if not THE
best. If you're playing along at home:
2004: The Ditty Bops - S/T
2005: Ladytron - Witching Hour?
2006: I don't know yet. Currently leaning towards The Ditty Bops - Moon Over The Freeway, but hey.
Anyway, though, here's yet another outstanding song from Witching
Hour. Why don't you have this record yet? GET IT. NOW.
Also -- you may have noticed that I've changed the layout of the VOX Blog a bit. As promised/threatened, I have gone through and provided Amazon links to almost all of the albums that I've provided. (In a few cases, the stuff hasn't been available on CD, or at least not available at Amazon, so I did another album by the same artist, usually. I tagged those ones in the post, so you can see, and I promise I'll let folks know that too. The format's always gonna be the audio file on the left, and the album on the right, and whichever one has artwork will be bigger. Because I done like to have the little squares of art on here. (And if they've both got the same art, then the audio file'll be bigger.) But yes -- pretty much anything I post here carries with it at least an implicit recommendation that you get the album. In the case of Underdog Victorious, it's an EXPLICIT recommendation. In both meanings of the word. But anyway, though, I hope you enjoy and check these things out.
And if by some WEIRD ASS QUIRK you actually want to throw money MY way instead of the artist's:
a) You are DAFT -- they are WAY more deserving than I am.
and
b) If you MUST, why not just get my DVD, since that way at least you get SOMETHING in return other than, um, wasting your money. But for reals, just go get the records.
This is from the last Barcelona album, Transhuman Revolution, and it's
the first song on there, and it's a pretty great one. This is my
favorite Barcelona album, and a pity they broke up after this.
Some really great lines in here, like "What can I do/I'm a shy boy and
raised Catholic", to explain the titular problem. One of the
Barcelona guys has formed a new band, Sprites, who are pretty
Barcelona-y. Which is good, because they need to continue to
exist. There is apparently another band called Barcelona who has
played at least a couple shows in Seattle. Boo to them for
stealing their name!
Also -- heads up, or, rather two!
First: I have uploaded my most recent Dub Club Mix for download here, so you can grab it if you are so inclined. The file will go away on the 19th or thereabouts as that's when my hosting expires, heh. Mwomp mwomp!
Secondly: I am about to upload the First Episode of the Untitled TODCRA Productions Project over at TODCRA.vox.com, so feel free to check that out! I'll be posting them every Sunday for about 15 weeks. Cause that's how many episodes there are. So feel free to put that in your iTunes RSS Podcast Downloader Thing since those actually ARE podcasts. (Kinda, they were actually broadcast on real radio first.) I'll be doing notes about them, too with each post. So go check that out. I'm really proud of the way those turned out. So, hooray!
