Whoa! I am BACK! Finally!
Hooray! I've also ripped in almost all of my CD library, so I'll
have even more stuff to choose from and all sorts of other stuff.
Anyway, by request -- here's a cut from Sgt. Major, one of the most
awesome bands in the Seattle area. If you're in town, check them
out. If you're not, pick up their first record. Either
way. This cut is a cover of the classic Who song, and it's so far
unreleased, but it looks like it's slated for their second album,
tenatively titled "On Green Battery Street". Whether or not it
appears will remain to be seen, but hopefully it does, because the Who
are awesome, and Sgt. Major is awesome, and they basically nail this
song. And it's kinda cool hearing it sung by a woman
anyway. So there you go! Rock!
This is from the album 6 1/2, which is the Jon
Auer covers EP. I almost chose his version of "Baby Bitch" by
Ween, which he does very well, but at the last second, decided to go
with Madonna's "Beautiful Stranger". Speaking of her, I am loathe
to admit it, but the stuff from her most recent album, Confessions Of A
Dance Floor Um Something A Rather I Don't Remember The Full Title And
I'm Tired And Wanna Go To Bed that I've heard is really good. The
new single, uh, Jump, I think, is pretty keen. I even liked the
song that had the video with her humping a bunch of half naked dudes on
a DDR machine. The video, not so much, just because, well, the
whole "Slutty Grandma" thing doesn't quite work, but hey. The
song was actually pretty good. But then, I dig that kind of dance
pop music, so hooray! Anyway, um, yes. Here! Jon
Auer! Dude from the Posies! EP! Dig it! I'm
going to sleep.
And here's the other half of the two-fer! I know, I just posted a Barnes & Barnes song a few days ago, but Barnes & Barnes are wicked good, so whatchugwinedobouddit? This is from Amazing Adult Fantasy, which is probably my favorite Barnes & Barnes record (and unlike Sicks, still available for purchase at CoolCDs.com), and it's a cover of the Sonny Bono/Cher song. Actually, the reason these two songs got posted is that on LJ, goethe_re_scape posted a few songs, including a Petty Booka song and Petula Clark doing "Bang Bang"; I replied mentioning both the songs I posted today, and he said he hadn't heard either. Which is a terrible tragedy, which must be rectified. So here we go! Anyway, this is a sorta punk-flavored version of the song, which Art Barnes has said is inspired by the band Fear, whom Barnes & Barnes were really digging at the time (and probably still are, really). This and their other Fear-inspired track, "I Hate The Boss" have made me really interested in checking out Fear, since those are really great Barnes & Barnes songs. (And, hey, their version of DEVO's "I Desire" re-written as "Positive Life (Before You Leave)" made me get into DEVO and, well, I'm a HUGE DEVO fan, so... it's pretty established that Barnes & Barnes have got good taste.) So, here it is -- check it out! It's pretty grand.
(Also, Amazon doesn't have Amazing Adult Fantasy -- what, you weren't paying attention? Go get it at CoolCDs.com!
This here's going to be a two-fer by request! Two covers, two
songs that are wicked awesome. Two kitties. (No kitties
involved.) This first one is by Petty Booka, a Japanese group
that does alternately country-flavored and hawaiian-flavored covers of
songs. This one is in the Country bin, and it's AMAZING.
It's one of those that when I play it for them, they pretty much do the
whole jaw-droppin' thing, because not only is it an amusing arrangement
of this song, and completely different than what you'd expect from
Madonna, but it's also an IRON-SOLID arrangement, too. Just
really amazing banjo work and everything. I love this one.
This was originally put out on the Sub Pop singles club, but it's available on The Day They Shot A Hole In The Jesus Egg, half of the odds-and-sods sets they put out with their early albums and whatnot (along with "Finally The Punk Rockers Are Taking Acid"). It's a cover of one of the greatest rock 'n' roll songs of all time, The Sonics' "Strychnine", which unbelieveably segues really, really well into Elvis Costello's (or, I suppose actually, Nick Lowe's) "(What's So Funny 'Bout) Peace, Love & Understanding". If you're expecting the later-era sounds of the Flaming Lips... well, I wouldn't say you'll be disappointed, because this is really awesome, but you'll be a bit confused. When I first heard this I was just completely blown away -- at first that they were covering "Strychnine", but then by the fact that they not only did it so well, but so seamlessly went into "Peace, Love & Understanding". The Flaming Lips are indeed pretty grand.
Also -- one of the things I'm thinking of doing is throwing up links to
cool music videos as well -- don't worry, they'll be a supplemental
thing to the daily mp3s, not something to replace it, though I probably
WILL still post the notes for them at the wiki, like I have been doing for all of these. So, you might check that out later.
